Parents:
The 8th grade Social Studies Department will be weighting the grades of students. We feel that it is a final step in preparation for high school. Homework is certainly important in our classrooms but it should not be the means by which a student shows their understanding of the material. Tests and projects are the assessment tools we use to evaluate understanding. With this in mind we are going to the following weighted scale:
20% Homework/Classwork
30% Quizzes/Themed Activities
50% Test/Projects
In reality here is how it works in our iNow grade books. You need to look not only at the assignment but what category the assignment falls under.

To find the average you must add up the total points per category the student made & divide by the total points possible. Then you multiply by the percent of weight for each category & you should have 3 numbers to add together to find the grade out of 100. For the above student
Homework points made 124/140 divide 124 by 140 = 88.6 x 20% = 17.7/20
Quiz points made 36/45 divide 36 by 45 = 80 x 30% = 24/30
Tests points made 73/85 divide 73 by 85 = 86 x 50% = 43/50
85/100 |
