A transplant to the South from Colorado, Mr. McDermott graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He studied visual art and art history with his studio focus in sculptural ceramics. Mr. McDermott completed a Master’s in teaching, specializing in Secondary Art Education at Colorado College in 2008. After completing his first year of teaching at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia, Mr. McDermott moved with his wife to Birmingham in order for her to pursue a degree in medicine at UAB.
Mr. McDermott's passions include making art and learning about the history of it. He primarily creates non-functional ceramic sculpture, but also enjoys making functional pieces on the wheel. He sketches frequently and has developed a recent interest in photography.
Outside of teaching and creating art, his interests and hobbies include listening to music, watching movies and following the Denver Broncos. He also loves to stay active through crossfit and playing all kinds of sports (ultimate frisbee, golf, tennis, rock climbing, etc.). Spending time with family and friends is his greatest joy.
