Cost, Timeline & Assessment for Seal of Biliteracy

  • Students apply for the Seal of Biliteracy during the application window set by MBHS and published on the school’s website.  The application fee is $30 and covers testing in all 4 areas, the cost of the Seal of Biliteracy medallion, and administrative costs to the school. Note that if a student has to retake one or more assessments, additional fees must be paid to cover the cost of those ACTFL assessments.

Students who wish to pursue the Seal must commit to at least four consecutive levels of study in the same world language during grades 8-12.  Years 1A and 1B count as 1 level.

The computerized AAPPL proficiency tests (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages, https://aappl.actfl.org/) will be administered during the fall semester of level 4.  If a student does not pass one or more sections in the fall, s/he may retest in the spring, based on guidelines set forth by ACTFL and MBHS.  Exceptions to this timeline may be made on a case by case basis.

The AAPPL Measure is based on proficiency standards set forth by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and it assesses:

    • Interpersonal Listening & Speaking
    • Presentational Writing
    • Interpretive Reading and Listening

Students who earn I4 proficiency in all areas of the AAPPL will be awarded the Seal of Biliteracy.
