Welcome to the Brookwood Forest Technology Department!  Technology is one of the tools used to provide resources, opportunities and ideas for our community of learners.  BWF has an active technology committee that helps plan and make decisions on technology design and usage.

    YouTube

Some of you have noticed that YouTube is not working for teachers like it used to.  YouTube has changed their video rating system and that change has had an impact on your access.  The temporary fix for this is to be sure to select and preview any YouTube videos you want to share with students ahead of time and submit them to this form to have them unblocked (if they are blocked).  YouTube videos that are not blocked on your MBS account need not be submitted.  Only YouTube videos you wish to show for students that are blocked on a TEACHER account need submitting.  Please submit in advance as this will be handled much like the IT Direct Ticket System.  A Coordinator has to go in and unblock each video manually, it is not automatic.  I recommend opening the linked form and adding it to your bookmarks for easy access.  YouTube is and will remain blocked for our students.  I will put a link to this form on my webpage as well.  You might want to bookmark it!

Wow!  What a great first few days!  I can’t believe all that we have gotten accomplished in this short time.

    1. ITdirect – The techs have done a great job of trying to get everything up and running. As a reminder – Put every computer name, service tag, barcode number in the body(Problem field)  on any ITdirects.  It will get your problem resolved faster than if you don’t.  Please don’t send me an email – put it in ITdirect.
    2. Resource:   Have you seen the new Brainpop Back to School 2020 movie?  It’s a great one to show kids (2-6) to be able to talk through ideas on how to start this year off in this uncertainty. Great for Growth mindset as well.  The graphic organizer allows students to type on it.   On that note – if you can’t login to Brainpop – please let me know.  We are working on getting classes put in so you can assign to students – meanwhile you can show from your account!  10 day Plan
    3. Labels? - any labels with names wrong for Chromebooks and you want them reprinted– please put in Itdirect – I can’t find them in my email.
    4. Appointment Times: Would your grade level or yourself like some time to work on Schoology or any other topic with Mrs. Mumm – sign up for appointments here – https://calendar.google.com/calendar/selfsched?sstoken=UUYyMFlfbjhBNjJNfGRlZmF1bHR8ZTZhZGFkNmI3ZmVhZWNmNzkzYWY1NmE3NmVlZTdjZGI
    5. Schoology Training Videos from last week – Thanks to Paula Stanbridge for filling in for me – will send her videos from last week that she graciously shared with us in a separate email.

  • Wow What a Week!

Posted by Sharon Mumm on 4/3/2020

Thank you so much for all that you are doing for the BWF students!  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate each and every one of you.  Because you guys have been incredible learners for several years you are in such a good place for doing what we are trying to do!

Thanks:  Shout-out to Eleanor Walker and Mandy Cramer for helping with the training this week!  They went above and beyond to help make the virtual conference a success.

Virtual Conference:  Recordings and resources from the Virtual Conference can be found here on the Schedule.  We are planning on providing on-going training over the next several weeks.  Please send me an email on any specific topics or help you think would be good to cover.  If you have something you would like to present let me know that as well.  We want it to be relevant for you!

Help for you:  ITdirect is your friend!  ITdirect will be my priority list.  I will answer emails, text, voicemail and smoke signals as I have time.  If you would like to schedule an appointment time with me I will have time available.

Help for Students and Parents:  I can already see how you guys are going to be front-line support for students and parents. Please put in an ITdirect for any issues you can’t solve.  We are working on a plan if we have broken chromebooks but at this point just put in an Itdirect ticket or have the parent email mbssupport@mtnbrook.k12.al.us.    Another source of help that you might want to have on your webpage, classroom, canvas page is this:

District eLearning Parent Help Page: https://www.mtnbrook.k12.al.us/Page/19217

Notice the following: *Classlink Tips for Students at Home & *Elementary Chromebook Home

Rules for on-line Meetings:  I was searching for a cute poster about norms for students for on-line meetings and just realized that it would be appropriate for each class to write and set their own classroom expectations.  If anyone’s class has one they want to share – I would love to see what they come up with.

    Apps and Extensions:

FYI-I force installed 2 Chrome extensions and an app for Staff today. (You will be able to see them when you restart your staff Chromebook and log back in or if using your home computer, when you sign in to Chrome and refresh your page.) And I force installed 1 extension for BWF K-6 Students today. Read below for more information.

    FOR STAFF:

    1. Screencastify extension – record your screen and voice or yourself.   (Use the Code CAST_COVID to get the premium version for free)
    2. Google Meet Grid View extension – adds an additional view to your Google Meet window where you can see all participants at once in a grid view.

Extensions show up here on the right side of Chrome’s Omnibox/Address bar:

    1. iPeevo Whiteboard App – A whiteboard for your Chromebook. Whiteboard allows you to draw or annotate directly onto a blank whiteboard or imported images in order to highlight, emphasize or clarify areas of interest (thought this might be really useful for math, etc. . . . ) When you launch the app, select use mouse only so you can use your mouse or finger on your Chromebook. If you pull this up and then launch Screencastify, you can record those lessons where you need to draw math problems or . . .

On a laptop or desktop (see image below): Chrome Apps show up here 1 on a laptop or desktop, when you are signed in to Chrome 2 and have your bookmarks bar showing 3

On a Chromebook, you swipe up from the bottom of your screen to reveal installed Chrome Apps, or you can click the Apps Launcher (circle) in lower left of Chromebook and then click the up arrow that appears to reveal installed Chrome Apps.

    FOR STUDENTS:

For students at BWF, K-6, I force installed the Google Meet Grid View extension.

  • eDay is coming

Posted by Sharon Mumm on 9/30/2019

    EDay is Coming Up!

What is an eDay? An eDay is a day in which students receive their classroom instruction electronically. eDay lessons are valuable instruction linked to grade level standards and in-class learning. eDays provide our students with the following benefits:

    · Practice with online learning, developing effective and creative ways to promote instruction beyond the classroom walls.

    · Preparation and practice in the event an eDay is called due to emergency circumstances.

How do we ensure a successful eDay?

    · Each teacher creates his/her own Class eDay and posts in a Digital Tool: Google Classroom or Canvas (5th,6th) If you want to link to multiple resources, those links can be placed in your Canvas or Google Classroom.

    · All students go through Classlink to access Grade Level eDay.

    · Students have prior in-class & at-home practice with all Tools & Skills used in eDay Lessons.

    · All eDay resources work on iPad, Chromebook & Computer and have been tested.

    · Brief instruction to access eDay is located off each Homeroom Webpage. Verbiage: “Welcome to our (insert date here) eDay. Please login through Classlink like we have practiced to access your eDay in (insert Google Classroom or Canvas here). Please visit your PE teacher and your special teacher’s website for their eDay information.“ (Instructional Video for Teachers on where/how to add to webpage Here from Crestline)

    · Specials & PE eDay Lessons are clearly linked on their webpage and links sent to the Homeroom teacher to be added to the class assignments.
