September Board Meeting Recap

Tuesday, September 12, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Brookwood Forest Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
Board members present: Jenifer Kimbrough, Jeffrey Brewer, Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel OdrezinBoard Meeting Agenda
The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting.
Recognitions:
The 2023-24 PTO Council was recognized for their upcoming year of service to each school and the district.
Reports to the Board:
Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented the monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements which were unanimously approved.
Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow presented the board members with the 2023-24 Enrollment Report which stated the following:

4,320 total students

2,363 elementary school students (K-6)

994 junior high school students (7-9)

963 high school students (10-12)
MBHS Principal, Carrie Busby, shared with the board members about the musical “We’ll Meet Again” which students had the opportunity to watch on Monday at MBHS. The historical production put on in part by the Alabama Holocaust Education Center was one of just a few shows shown statewide to students in their own high school building.
Finally, Carley King, Charlsie Wigley, and Jill Wiggins spoke to board members about their positive experiences at New Teacher Week 2023.
FY 2024 2nd Budget Hearing:
The 2024 budget was approved.
Old business:
The board unanimously approved Policy J-15 regarding student records.
New business:
The board unanimously approved the latest personnel recommendations and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.
September announcements:
Friday, October 6, 2023 is an e-Day and all Mountain Brook school buildings will be closed on Monday, October 9 for a weather day.
The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, October 16th at 3:30 p.m. at Cherokee Bend Elementary. -
