November Board Meeting Report

  • Tuesday, November 14, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Crestline Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
    Board members present: Jenifer Kimbrough, Jeffrey Brewer, Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin.

    Board Meeting Agenda
    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting.

    Recognitions:

    • The six Mountain Brook Schools Teachers of the Year were recognized by their Principal.

      • Kendra Bierbauer - Crestline

      • Leah Saab - Cherokee Bend

      • Sarah Richardson - Mountain Brook Elementary

      • Perry Wright - Brookwood Forest

      • Craig Jelks - Mountain Brook Junior High

      • Kelly Chaffin - Mountain Brook High School

    • MBS is home to 54 National Board Certified Teachers. Those who were available to attend the meeting were recognized.

    • Three students from MBHS who received National Merit Letters of Commendation (Frederic Smith, Alice Estes and William Cain) were recognized.

    • MBHS Homecoming Queen, Mimi Dorough, was recognized.

    • MBHS baseball head coach, Lee Gann, was recognized for being named to the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2024.

    • Dr. Barlow ended recognitions by giving a shoutout to board member, Daniel Odrezin, as Daniel and his wife, Meredith, celebrated their recent birth of their daughter, Sydney Alice Odrezin, who will be a member of the MBHS Class of 2042!

    Reports to the Board:
    Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented the monthly construction update to board members. MBS Chief School Financial Officer, Kari Austin, presented board members with the district’s monthly financial statements which were unanimously approved.

    Old business:
    The following items were approved and did not receive any community review or feedback since the October board meeting:

    • Policy J-6 Enrollment Eligibility/Enrollment Procedures and Student residence was revised

    • Policy J-8 Student Transfers was revised

    • Pre-AP English 1 and 2 (9th and 10th Grades) was approved

    • Python Coding - Computer Science Elective was approved

    • ACT Prep Elective was approved

    New business:

    • The board unanimously approved the latest personnel recommendations and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    • Policy J-40 (Guidelines for Determining Class Size Special Needs Students) was unanimously approved to be removed.

    • The Superintendent Evaluation and Approval of 2nd Amendment to Employment Contract of the Superintendent was presented by Mrs. Kimbrough and unanimously approved by the board.

    • The Tot Lot/Crestline playground swap with the city of Mountain Brook was unanimously approved by the board to grant ownership of the playground to the school system and ownership of the Tot Lot to the City of Mountain Brook.

    November announcements: 

    • Thanksgiving Break - November 22-24, 2023 - All schools and offices closed.

    • Thursday, November 30, 2023: Movie Night for the entire Mountain Brook community and MBS faculty and staff + families!

    • The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, December 11th at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain Brook Elementary.
