MBHS Broadcast Students Take Home State Awards

  • Tuesday, February 6, 2024 -- The Mountain Brook High School broadcast class traveled to Tuscaloosa last week to participate in the annual convention for the Alabama Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) and the Spartan 2 News staff brought home 13 individual awards:

    • First Place Director - Ty Shotts
    • First Place News Anchors - Mary Caroline South and Frederic Maldia
    • First Place Sports Anchor - Kinleigh Freeman
    • Third Place Editing - Frederic Maldia
    • Second Place Editing - Mary Caroline South
    • Third Place Feature - Lydia Loglisci
    • First Place Feature - Frederic Maldia
    • First Place News Story - Mary Caroline South
    • Second Place Sports Story - Kinleigh Freeman
    • First Place Sports Story - Frederic Maldia
    • Third Place Deadline News Anchor - Mary Caroline South

    Maldia won the Rick Bragg Award for Feature Writing, which came with a $250 cash prize. Additionally, the staff won the 'All Alabama Award,' which is the top award in the state for excellence in all areas of production. Additionally, congratulations to Lydia Loglisci who was named the state's Broadcast Journalist of the Year!

    "I’m so incredibly proud of these students," MBHS Director of Media Arts, Brooke Dennis, said. "All of their hard work has paid off! We won an award in almost every category that we submitted an entry and we won multiple awards in several categories."
