MBHS Athletics Announces Coaching Changes

  • Monday, April 15, 2024 – Mountain Brook High School Athletic Director, Andy Urban, has announced the school’s two newest head coaches. Anthony Marino is the new head coach of the Swim and Dive program and Joe Webb will lead the girls flag football team this fall.

Marino replaces Paige Tatarek who stepped down as head coach this spring. Marino, a high school science teacher, has helped coach the cross country and track teams over the last two years at MBHS and is eager about the opportunity to venture into leading the Swim and Dive program.

“I’m excited to step into this role and begin to create relationships with our Swim and Dive students,” Marino said. “I have a passion for leading and coaching and this is a great opportunity. Paige (Tatarek) has been so influential to these student athletes and I have big shoes to fill as she is not only an impactful coach but helped the program be successful in so many ways.”

Tatarek has led the program for seven years and has coached swimming and diving for 30 years in her career.

“I would like to thank the kids in my program and their families for their support of me as their coach and as a person,” Tatarek said. “Coaching swim and dive is a passion of mine and these kids made it worth it each time we were at the pool. I’m going to miss being around them but look forward to having more time with my family.”

Webb has coached varsity boys soccer at MBHS for 28 years and is looking forward to the chance to now “coach football in addition to futbol.”

“We are going to grow this team and program and have fun doing it,” Webb said. “This will be a great program to lead and provide lots of students the opportunity to play a sport that has more recently been sanctioned by the AHSAA. It’s going to be an exciting season!”

Webb will be assisted by Heather McGuirk, who also coaches softball at MBHS. Urban foresees a great year of athletic success ahead.

“Adding Anthony to our dynamic group of head coaches will only strengthen the group,” Urban said. “I am a firm believer that we have the best group of head coaches in the state who are supported by great assistants. I know Joe will do a great job with flag football too. I have to add a special thanks to Paige and all her dedicated work she did for the Swim and Dive program. We’re looking forward to a great 2024-25 campaign and finishing this school year on a strong athletic note. Go Spartans!”
