May Board Meeting Recap

  • Tuesday, May 21, 2024 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday, May 20 at the Charles Mason Building (Board of Education) for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

    Board members present: Jenifer Kimbrough, Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin.

    Board Meeting Agenda

    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting.


    • Members of the 2023-24 PTO Council were recognized for their commitment and service to the school system and all schools over the course of the school year.

    • Andy Urban (Atheltic Director) provided board members with a spring sports update. This spring, Spartan athletic programs won state championships in boys and girls tennis, girls outdoor track and girls soccer!

    • Kaitlyn Davis, a student at Mountain Brook Junior High, was recognized for being named the District 4A Visual Arts Show Winner! Her work was on display during the board meeting.

    • Kristin Walton and Derek Kennedy (MBJH) were recognized for being named the Exemplary and Outstanding Graduate Students in their respective graduate programs!

    • The school district’s technology team, including technology coordinators, were recognized for being named the Classlink CLON 2024 Awards of Excellence Winner!

    • Ashley McCombs and Heather Mays were recognized. Ashley is wrapping up her final year as Principal at Mountain Brook Elementary and Dr. Mays will serve as the school’s new Principal beginning this summer! 

    Reports to the Board:
    MBS Chief School Financial Officer, Kari Austin, presented board members with the district’s monthly financial statements, which were unanimously approved. The board also then approved the FY24 Budget Amendment from Austin. Finally, MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, presented the monthly facilities update.

    Old business:

    • The AP Psychology curriculum course revisions did not receive public comment and were unanimously approved.

    New business:

    • The board unanimously approved the latest personnel recommendations and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    • The 2024-2025 board meeting calendar was approved unanimously.

    • The 240 day summer work schedule was approved unanimously.

    May announcements: 

    • MBHS graduation will take place on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University.

    • Last day of school: Wednesday, May 22, 2024

    • The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, June 10th at 3:30 p.m. at the Charles Mason Building (Board of Education) with the work session starting at 2:00 p.m.
