    PERSUASIVE ESSAY

     

    1) Topic sentence must state an opinion clearly and precisely.

    2) At least three reasons must be given to explain the opinion.

    3) Three details or facts supporting each reason must be included in each paragraph.

    4) Arrange the REASONS and supporting details from least important to most important.

    5) Have a clincher sentence that sums up the argument.

     

    EXAMPLE:

     I. Introductory Paragraph:

                A. Topic sentence: “I believe statement”

                Introduces the topic with relevant details or background information

     

    II. Paragraph 2: Reason #1   Note: use transitional words

    Take one reason from every paragraph and RE-STATE them in the conclusion. (That means you have three sentences at least here.) Add the clincher sentence.

     

    Evaluation:

    Do you start with an opinion statement? This is VERY important.

    Do you have one reason per paragraph?

    Do you have three supporting details for each paragraph?

    Have you used transition words at the beginning of each paragraph? (First, Second, Third, Finally, In Conclusion)

    Have you stated your most important reason last?

    Have you re-stated all of your reasons in the conclusion?

    Does your essay make logical sense?

    Have you made use of sentence variety?
