Ms. Katie Thomas
Bonjour! I am excited to start my fourth year teaching French I and II to 8th and 9th grade students at MBJH. I had the opportunity to live in France as both a student and a teacher for nearly four years altogether, and I strive to bring my own personal story to my profession and enrich the lives of students through exploration of French language and culture. French has allowed me to live abroad and meet people from all over the world and I am passionate about starting your journey with the language!
I graduated with degrees in French and English from Sewanee, and then had the opportunity to teach English classes at the University of Nantes in France. I continued my studies of French language and literature at The University of Nottingham, England, completing a Master's in Comparative Literature. I then went on to complete a Master's degree in Education: French K-12 from UAB.
What makes French unique from other languages at MBJH? We have monthly food/project days! You can connect your own interests and passions and link them to French and share with the class (sports, art, food, fashion, etc.). We also celebrate French holiday traditions with our Bûche de Noël (yule log cake) competition every December and Chandeleur, an in-class crêpe making day, every February. In addition, we allow all students to retake assessments where they scored below expected proficiency standards, so that students can show they have learned concepts and demonstrated mastery of skills before moving on!
