Degrees and Certifications:
This year marks Ms. Upton’s fifteenth year as an English language arts teacher. She graduated summa cum laude from Auburn University in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree in secondary education. For thirteen years, she taught at Opelika High School in Opelika, AL, where she taught various levels of both 10th and 11th grade English courses, ACT Preparation, Literary Magazine, and Publishing (Introduction to Graphic Design). An ardent believer in school and community involvement, Ms. Upton enjoyed serving and organizing a variety of student activities. She served as adviser for the state and national award-winning literary magazine, Perspectives, as well as cheerleading coach and sponsor/adviser for varied clubs and activities, such as Open Hands Serving, Diamond Darlings, and Young Spirit of Democracy. Ms. Upton served on numerous district and school committees and presented various workshops. She also shared her classroom with several lab students and intern placements from Auburn University.
Beginning in 2014, Ms. Upton began work with the A+ College Ready program through the Alabama Department of Education and National Math and Science Initiative. She served as an Advanced Placement English Language and Composition and pre-AP English 10 curriculum developer, study session presenter, and mock reading table leader. Ms. Upton graduated in July 2018 with her master’s degree in library media from the University of West Alabama.
During the 2018-2019 school year, Ms. Upton will be teaching Advanced English 10 and College Prep English 11. She is also excited to continue as co-adviser of the school’s award-winning newspaper, Sword & Shield. Ms. Upton enjoys reading (of course), traveling to both new and familiar places (Paris is her favorite!), and spending time with friends and family.
