Mr. Lars Porter

Lars Porter is excited to be returning to Mountain Brook Schools.  A native of the Birmingham area, Lars graduated from Vestavia Hills High School before majoring in Mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College.  During his tenure at BSC, he ran cross country and track, which later led to his appointment as the Panther's Head Cross Country Coach. Six years coaching at the Division I and Division III levels led Lars into youth ministry at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church here in Mountain Brook.  This experience, along with part-time coaching at Mountain Brook Junior High, helped Lars realize that his heart was in the schools. So fast-forwarding another six years, with six years teaching math and coaching cross country/track at Homewood High School, he has found his way back to MBJH.

Lars has a B.S. in Mathematics, a Masters in Public and Private Management from Birmingham-Southern College, an M.Ed. from Samford University, and an Educational Leadership Certificate from the University of West Alabama.

Lars’s favorite thing about teaching math is helping students become problem-solvers.  He believes that problems will face everyone in life, and math serves as a wonderful platform to develop the skills and perseverance required to complete the most complex problems one might face.  His favorite thing about teaching kids, especially junior high kids, is watching their passion come to life. He believes that it is an honor play a role as those passions are discovered.

Lars is married to Dana Porter, and they have two energetic and enthusiastic elementary school boys.
