Reading and writing are two subjects that are so intertwined that there is no way to separate the two! The more I read, the better writer I will become through the process of opening myself up to various genres, strategies, vocabulary, and styles. Writing seems to be an activity that many students find intimidating. Imagine that you are handed a blank sheet of paper and asked to share your thoughts, fears, and dreams. Now imagine that you are in the 5th grade and asked to do this and share your musings with your classmates. WHAT???
It is my desire to take away the stigma of writing and open their minds to the beautiful craft of expressing themselves in a completely non-threatening environment. Writing should be fun, deep, meaningful, an activity that is looked forward to instead of dreaded!
This year we will be pairing writing with social studies and I couldn't be more thrilled!! When you think of a "history nerd", that's me! I can't get enough. We will be exploring the topics of Native Americans, Colonial life, the American Revolution, and so much more. This will not be a course of memorizing facts and dates. It will be jam packed with exciting projects and discecting of primary sources. Trust me, it is going to be fun and exciting!
