“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” This quote was said by a wise character in a book series that has changed my life. This quote is one of the many quotes from that series that has stuck with me as an educator, and is one of my favorites to discuss with my classes. I am a strong believer that students discovering the power of a good book is one of the many ways that they can grow into what they want to be!
What if you don’t know what you want to be? Well, that is where the power of “yet” comes in.
“I don’t like to read…” vs. “I don’t like to read...yet.”
“I don’t understand…” vs. “I don’t understand...yet.”
“I don’t like this book…” vs. “I don’t like this book...yet.”
“I am not a reader….” vs. “I am not a reader...yet.”
“I don’t know what I want to be...yet.”
My hope is that each of my students come into class understanding that the power of yet can break down any prior thoughts of what they believed they could or could not do. With the power of yet in mind, you can grow to be whatever you want to be! The road to getting to where you want to be is paved with characters, experiences, thoughts, feelings, and wisdom that all can be found in a book! I look forward to helping my students believe in the power of yet and the magic of a great book so they have the tools to grow into whatever they want to be.
