"Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,
When I heard my Senior English teacher quote these words from The Prologue to The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, I was catapulted into Medieval Times just by the tone of her voice, which made the material come to life. Because of her love of English and the way she presented it, I am in the classroom today. Discovering who my students are, while inspiring them to be their best, is my impetus in the classroom.
I graduated from the University of Alabama in 1989 with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education English/Language Arts. My first teaching job was at Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia, where I taught ninth grade English and created a dance team. In 1991, I married my husband, and we moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. While in Indianapolis, I attended IUPUI and worked towards a masters in Counseling/Psychology. In 1991, my husband landed a job in Atlanta. After moving back to Atlanta, I taught for two years at Riverdale Middle School as a seventh grade English teacher. In 1995, I had my first child and decided to take on the most important job of my life- stay-at-home mom. Fourteen years and three children later, I decided to re-enter the classroom.
From 2008-2013, I taught at Oak Mountain High School. My experience there included ninth grade English at three levels: regular, advanced, and honors. Along with Freshman English, I taught Advanced Placement Language and Composition for two years and helped develop that curriculum for the school. I also served on the Shelby County English Curriculum committee and worked with other teachers on developing the new eleventh grade curriculum. Many of my extracurricular activities included dance team sponsor, Student Government Association sponsor, Senior Sponsor, and Freshman volleyball sponsor. In 2011-2012, I was named Oak Mountain High School Teacher of the Year. In December of 2016, I received my Masters in School Counseling from the University of West Alabama. For the past five years, I have taught English 9 at Mountain Brook Junior High and have relished the relationships that I have formed with students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators.
I feel so blessed to be a part of Mountain Brook Junior High, and I look forward to getting to know each of my students this year and cultivating a relationship that inspires and motivates each individual to be a life-long learner, thus reaching his/her full potential!
