Ms. Janet Nelson

My name is Janet Nelson.  I began teaching music at Crestline in 2006. I am delighted to have the opportunity to teach your child. I have the pleasure of collaborating on a daily basis with my colleague Laura Butler.  What a luxury for an elementary school to have two music teachers!

 Professional Background

I hold Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from Samford University.  I have had additional opportunities for study at the University of Memphis, the University of Connecticut and the University of South Carolina.  In November 2009 I completed requirements for National Board Certification in early and middle childhood music. In May of 2014, I was honored to receive a Mountain Brook City Schools Performance Award. I am a member of NAfME and ACDA.

My teaching experience prior to Crestline includes high school choral music, elementary music, handbells, piano, and preschool music in church and school settings in Homewood, Myrtle Beach and Knoxville. My weekends are filled with more music as I am also the organist/choirmaster at St. Alban's Episcopal Church.  I teach a small number of piano students as well.

The summer of 2014 has been a musically rich time for me as I have had the opportunity to perform with a group of local friends in the premier of a choral work at Carnegie Hall. In the same concert, I also sang the Mozart Requiem under the direction of British composer/conductor John Rutter. Professional development doesn't get any better than this. In June I accompanied Trinity Methodist Church’s youth choir as they traveled to Florida and Georgia in a combination choir tour and mission trip. We spent three days serving in inner city Atlanta conducting a music camp for young children. In July, I taught music and drama in a four day arts camp in Perry County that was housed at Judson College.
