  • Kid-Friendly Coding Languages and Learning Tools - Syracuse University

This site was developed by the Graduate Program (Online Master's in Computer Engineering) at Syracuse University.  It is a quick blog with a list of online programs (some free, some for a fee) where kids can explore different programming languages.  Many I have heard of and used or checked out.  A few require signing up and paying for so I can't say much for those.  As I find out more information about programs, I can definitely revise and recommend!

  • MIT App Inventor

This is the web based program that we use in App Creators.  If working on a desktop, there is an emulator that can be downloaded so that students can test their app as they design.  Otherwise, students can use an Android device (Phone, Tablet) to test their device.  MIT is working on making the program work across iOS and Android Platforms

  • Makecode by Microbit

This is the web based program that we use in our Innovators and Makers class.  Because it has an included emulator, students can test their programs without having the physical device in front of them.

  • Software Programming and Coding Glossary for Kids

This cool website was recommended to me by fellow coding colleagues Myra and Ms. Martin from the Lyndhurst STEM club! Along with easily understandable definitions to some of the more common terms in coding, it has links to other websites that teach coding.  Thanks Myra and Ms. Martin!

  • Jeroo!

This awesome website is more of a resource for teachers wanting to teach Python or Javascript in a creative way.  With the backdrop of an island full of animals that hop around collecting flowers and foiling the traps of poachers, this site has endless possibilities for teaching object-oriented programming.
