Mountain Brook Elementary third graders Olivia Murrell and Callie Bearden along with their teachers, Ms. Cindy Peavy and Ms. Kim Hall, were recognized at the November Board of Education meeting for their accomplishments in the McWane Science Center’s Earth Science Poetry and Art Contest. Each girl won 1st place in her respective category in October. Of 200 submissions, the committee of judges selected Olivia Murrell’s artwork and Callie Bearden’s poetry as the best fits for the prompt of addressing humankind’s relationship and responsibilities to the planet in a creative and thoughtful way.
Olivia’s artwork depicted planet earth with the caption, “Fragile: Handle with Care,” and Callie’s poem beautifully described the ocean. The girls received “swag bags” full of goodies from McWane’s Cool Stuff Store as their prizes.
