Setting up iTunes on your school desktop to sync your school iPad:

 

All school-owned iPads are set up through Apple Configurator and Registered with Airwatch prior to usage, so we are not “syncing” to set up an iPad.

 

Teachers may choose to sync their iPad for various reasons, for example: to make a local backup of their iPad content, to get songs they’ve ripped from a CD to their iTunes on their desktop to their iPad, to get movies they created with a digital or flip camera that they’ve saved to their iTunes on their desktop to their iPad.

 

(The following directions may vary slightly with iTunes update changes.)

 

1. If iTunes is not on the desktop, download iTunes. If iTunes is on the computer, you can access iTunes by going to start and typing iTunes. If you have iTunes, open it and make sure it is the latest version. If it is not, iTunes will prompt you to upgrade. Do so and close iTunes.

2. Remap your iTunes data folder to your c drive (If you have a previously saved copy of your iTunes, you can now go find it on your shared or external drive and copy it from there to your C drive. If this is a new iPad set up for you, you will have to copy the iTunes data folder from your G drive (G/My Music/iTunes) to the root of the C drive on your computer. (Background Information: Mtnbrook maps My Music to G drives thus causing iTunes data to be on the G drive. The G drive will fill up if we leave iTunes data in the G drive, so this is VERY important.)

3. Important: Hold down shift when you open iTunes and choose the library file in C/iTunes.

4. iTunes will open.

5. Important: Click on Preferences for Devices and click to prevent devices from syncing automatically.

6. Make sure the library is in C/iTunes and NOT G/my music. On this same window, click to keep iTunes media organized and to copy files to iTunes media. Click OK.

7. Authorize this computer for your iTunes account. If you have more than one iTunes account you use on your iPad, authorize this computer for the additional account as well. Store/Authorize this computer. You will type in your apple itunes user ID and password to authorize.

8. Transfer purchases from your iPad to your desktop. File/Transfer purchases from iPad.

9. Plug in your iPad. You will see the name of your iPad appear in the iTunes window.

10. Once the iPad is plugged in, iTunes will prompt you if your iPad has new software update. Feel free to update if you are prompted.

11. When you plug in your iPad, across the top of the iTunes window, you will see options: apps, music, photo, movies, podcast, etc. Click on each of the tabs across the top and choose syncing settings for each tab.  Suggestion: Instead of syncing all photos from your computer, create a folder on C/iTunes called iPad pictures and t only sync photos that are in that folder.  In addition, if the user has a lot of music in the library, a suggestion is to choose to only sync selected playlists on this iPad. (If the user syncs to their iPod as well, the user may have more music than will fit on the iPad.)
