On Wednesday, the Spartans defeated Spanish Fort 56-43 to win the 6A state championship. Capping off a successful high school career, senior forward Rayven Turner was awarded with the MVP award.

The Spartans finished the season riding a 19-game winning streak en route to a 30-6 overall record. Including 5A, 6A, and 7A, 7 wins came against a team that reached the final four and 2 wins came against runner-ups. In the postseason, Mountain Brook defeated Briarwood Christain, Homewood, Jackson-Olin, Oxford, defending 6A champion Huffman, Eufaula, and finally Spanish Fort. Even in an unprecedented year, some things don’t change:the Spartans have won their 4th championship in the past five seasons.

Winning the state championship was the goal for the team this year, especially because they had a chip on their shoulder all season long.

“It [winning the championship) means a lot to our team. So many people were doubting us. They all thought Mountain Brook was irrelevant now,” junior guard Parks McLain said.

This game also marks the end of the seniors’ career. They are certainly happy to cap off their careers going out on top.

I’ve seen them [the seniors] grow up from the elementary age when they came to our camps to watching them grow into young men! It’s exciting and sad at the same time! I’m proud of the legacy they will leave on Mountain Brook Basketball!” Coach Davis said.

He also gets to share the joy of the champion title with his son, Ty Davis, who plays on the Varsity Team, making the accomplishment all the better.

Coach Davis credits their successful season to their hard work, fearlessness, and acceptance and trust in the coaches.

This team ranks number 1 from the standpoint of me being the head coach of all the teams I’ve been a part of here at Mountain Brook!” Coach Davis said.
