The Mountain Brook Girls Tennis Team has had a strong start to their season. So far, they are undefeated, having beaten major competitors like Homewood.
Last season, the team had three seniors that helped carry them to state. The loss of these seniors was a challenge for the team, but replacing them has been no problem. Many sophomores have stepped up to the plate, and now, they mostly compose the team.
“It’s been fun to watch how the new players sort of mold into the new format of the team,” said girls’ coach Dr. Lamar.
The growing team has proven that strength lies in numbers. With many teammates, especially sophomores, players can sub in for others when it's necessary. This season, the number one singles and doubles player, Pippa Roy, had to sit some matches out due to injury, but her teammates were able to fill in for her.
“It is incredible how flexible our lineup can be, and just goes to show how deep our lineup is,” said co-captain Moira Dowling.
Dowling also explained how everyone drives each other to improve and play their best:
“Our lineup is so deep that there is always someone who is fighting to take your spot, and likewise you find yourself always working hard to move up. This dynamic definitely causes everyone to continually improve and create a very strong team,” Dowling added.
While the team is big and competitive, they are also closely knit and supportive.
“The team's greatest strength is definitely the support we give one another,” said Dowling.
Dr. Lamar also emphasized the aspect of community on the team:“Everybody gets along, and everybody pulls everybody else to succeed, and that makes it for a much easier year.”
The 6A Tennis State Tournament will take place in April. The girls tennis team has won the past four state championships. They are determined to work hard and defend the title again this year.
“I believe we need to continue to work hard in practices and matches, and prepare for some tough competition,” Dowling stated on their efforts.
Dowling was confident in the team’s abilities but hesitant to make a definite prediction.
“If we continue to perform the way we have been in our matches so far this season, I would say we have a good shot at defending our state title, but I don't want to speak too soon,” Dowling added.
