Volley Ball Team Celebrates their State Championships

On October 27, 2021, Mountain Brook Girls Volleyball team beat St. Paul's Highschool Girls Volleyball team to win the Alabama 6A State Championship.

From their first five-set win to open the season against McGil-Toolen to their five set nail biter in the State Semifinals against Homewood, the Mountain Brook High School volleyball team had one main focus: Climbing together.

During the regular season, the team went 43-12 winning several games against 7A opponents and multiple games against teams from Tennessee.

In the first round of the State Tournament, the Spartans faced off against St. James High School and won 3-0 in straight sets. Then, they faced off against Homewood High School which would prove to be their toughest matchup of the year.

The Spartans were down 1-2 against Homewood as they approached the fourth set. In the end, the Spartans powered through and were able to beat Homewood 3-2 after the fifth set.

“Once you get to the fifth set it can really go either way . . . they banded together and once they decided they were going to fight, I knew it was going to be a win in our favor,” Head Coach Mattie Gardener said.

After their victory against Homewood, Mountain Brook faced their final test in the State Championship where they beat St. Paul's High School 3-0 in the straight sets.

“I was extremely proud of my team and especially our fight in the final four,” senior captain Greer Golden said.

This was a proud moment for the Spartans as they amounted to their third straight state championship.

“It was the best way to end and I could not be happier,” Golden added.
