September Board Meeting Recap

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday, September 8 at Brookwood Forest Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
Board Members present: Jenifer Kimbrough, Anna Comer, Jeffrey Brewer, Daniel Odrezin and Anne Schilleci.
Board Meeting Agenda
The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting.
Recognitions:
- Mountain Brook City Council Member, Virginia Smith, and Mayor Stewart Welch were recognized for their years of service to the City of Mountain Brook and dedicated partnership to the school district.
- Senator Dan Roberts addressed the board expressing his appreciation for the schools following a recent generous contribution to the school system.
- The Mountain Brook School Resource Officer (SRO) Team was introduced and recognized. Over the summer, their team received multiple team and individual awards for their work. They are only one of eight SRO teams across the country who have been named a ‘model agency’ by the National Association of School Resource Officers.
- MBHS custodian, I Garsuta, was recognized for winning a gold medal in the 2025 World Police & Fire Games as a coach for the Philippines basketball team.
Reports to the Board:
- MBS Chief School Financial Officer, Kari Austin, presented board members with the district’s monthly financial statements, which were unanimously approved.
- Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow shared official enrollment numbers with the board. They are as follows:
- 4,376 K-12 students
- 345 Kindergarten students
- 2,387 Elementary students*
- 1,008 Junior High students
- 981 High School students
- Additionally we have 56 PreK students and nine ‘super senior’ students involved in extended partnership programs with places like Samford University.
- *Our elementary student enrollment is the highest it has been in the last 13 years.
- Professional Development Specialist, Holly Martin, provided board members with a snapshot of summer professional learning accomplishments. This is highlighted by 10,913 recorded contact hours of professional learning among 180 sessions from our faculty and staff. - The board unanimously approved the latest personnel recommendations and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.
