Cross Country Retains State Title Reign

Mountain Brook Cross Country continued its reign of running excellence by sweeping the 6A state cross country championships Saturday, November 8 in Oakville. The girls locked up their 5th consecutive state championship and 28th in program history. Meanwhile, the boys won their 4th title in a row bringing their program total to 18 cross country state championships.
Girls:
The Spartans had four runners (among team scoring participants) in the top 10 and five in the top 15 en route to scoring a team total of 36 points. Second place Homewood had 84.
For the Spartans, Francesca Demarco was the overall runner-up with a time of 18:44.77. Ann Gibson Hamilton and Georgia Jayne Stuckey took 6th and 7th place overall respectively while Anna Erdberg and Caroline Russell rounded out the top five.
Maya Cooper, Frances Hill, Lila Holley and June Record also finished among the top 50 when accounting for team-based scoring runners. Emelie White, who has been the Spartans top performer throughout the season, was unable to complete the race due to injury. Even without White, the Spartans prevailed proving their depth as a program.
Boys:
Meanwhile, the boys had four runners finish in the overall top 15 and all five scoring Spartans place among the top 20 finishers. Braden Little was the race runner-up with a time of 15:54.30. Behind Braden, Oliver Mange and William Morgan crossed the line in 6th and 7th place. Brooks Bazemore was 13th overall and James Flack was 18th.
Luke Cribbs and Joseph Spencer completed the race two seconds apart in 28th and 29th place overall. Jack Williamson, Crawford Screws and Ethan Schniper all finished top 50 as well. A team score of 44 was more than enough for victory as Homewood finished second with 111 team points.
